Here are some important facts, figures and resources about software piracy from the Business Software Alliance:

- States with the lowest population density had the highest software piracy rates. The state with the highest software piracy rate is Mississippi, at 42%.

- The states with the lowest piracy rates are Illinois (13.5%), Michigan (13.9%) and Ohio (14.3%).

- Civil damages can exceed $150,000 for each software program copied. Companies can also be subjected to criminal penalties, including fines of up to $250,000 or five years in jail.
