I agree with TJ McCue on not needing 1 million followers. It's the saying we always here - Quality over Quantity.

Social media is a good tool to build relationships and engage in a conversation. As Lisa said, "you need to use it to engage with your customers and find out what people are really saying about your business." It is yet another initiative to better understand you client database.

As you interact with your followers remember to take all feedback, good and bad as a positive progression for your company. By responding appropriately you will reaffirm the quality aspect of your relationships.

With every post you make me regret more and more that I didn't attend BlogWorldExpo.

Anyway, I absolutely agree with you about email marketing. It is still a great way to present a 1-to-1 message that is personal and targeted, so why would you abandon it?

Interesting thoughts on meta data and you as a brand (or Me 2.0 if you want to use Dan Schawbel's book title). I am seeing more and more signs that I (editor of EGO blog) have a role to fill when it comes to give moral support and intellectual fuel to sole traders (sole proprietors, solo entrepreneurs, freelancers, etc.) in order to help them build, develop and protect their personal brand.

Lisa
This comment on you do not need 1 million followers is powerful. So true. So relevant. Let's not chase numbers. Let's find, explore, and develop relationships.

I enjoy Chris' inside look newsletter, too. I have multiple friends in the email marketing industry and they are doing very, very well. Email would have to convert higher than RSS -- I only look at RSS when I make time. Email hits me all day and if I opted in, I'm likely to look.
