I would agree email marketing is one of thew most powerful tools a small business can do to help grow it's customer base and revenues. There's a ton of strategy that can be used with email marketing as well, that also help drive business strategy and direction based on how your users are interacting with your email campaigns. Email is powerful, very powerful, but it takes some proven email strategies to take full advantage of the powerful tool.

The problem with services such as Craigslist, Yelp and others is that they are in fact local in nature, and small business needs to be national and many times international. Small business owners need to think in terms of reaching as many customers as possible and the internet allows us to have a world wide market. If a business makes something, then why not sell it everywhere.

I'd like to see that "Social Media" stat at the top broken down so we could see how many businesses are using YouTube or a similar service.

It is amazing how many people you can connect with by using the power of video on the web. Videos become "shareable" advertising that can be passed on from your friends to their friends and so on.

It is so easy and so affordable for a small business to look like a big deal by creating a TV-style commercial for the web.

Is this the first time that research firm Hurwitz & Associates is doing a survey on small businesses?

Small business owners are always trying to squeeze as much benefit as possible out of their budgets, so I'm not surprised at all by their propensity toward online marketing channels. Many of these areas have less competition and, with a little training, even a small business can compete with the big dogs.

@Grant - Great resource sites.
