Thanks for the quick reply Joel!

We're everywhere: FB, Twitter, G+, LinkedIn, YouTube, as well as several directories(i.e. Yelp) and Web 2.0(i.e. Squidoo).

As for Google+ we have a page and it's on our radar to optimize it, however, we're focusing most of our attention to Facebook and LinkedIn. Facebook b/c it's great for social interaction and LinkedIn is great for getting testimonials and showing the professional side of our services.

As far as "keeping it real" I've heard the Social Marketing is 95% social and 5% marketing. We've been mixing our posts by having playful topics(i.e. who are you pulling for in the Super Bowl) with more serious topics(AccountingToday's article about the IRS holding refunds longer than necessary).

And oh yea, thanks for the link to the 2012 trends too :)

Glad you stopped by Small Business Trends, Clint.

When it comes to social media marketing, keeping things real is crucial. Sometimes the expectations for people are so high, that anything less than some crazy viral thing--going viral, is seen as a disappointment.

Make sure that you are on the major social networks, and if you haven't already, jump on Google+. You can create a page for your business there now.

As for 2012 Franchise Trends...this should help you- http://smallbiztrends.com/2011/12/franchise-trends-for-2012.html

Looks like an oldie, but goodie. Any updates for the trends of 2011 and 2012?

We're looking to build our small family business in the Accounting and Tax Services industry into a franchise. It's crazy how you mention that established brands are cashing in on the Social Media craze. Personally, we still haven't quite seen the results we'd like but we also know that the purpose of Social Media is to first build a loyal following and then convert to clients ;)

Joel,
All good ideas. In particular, I would probably highlight those industries that are being supported by the current administration - health care (particularly home health care), "green" industries, and education.
