Don’t get me wrong, being self-employed is fantastic, but it also means that when you’re a one man business like me that no one else is there to pick up the slack.
Business a little slow? Time to dig in. More business than expected? So long, weekend.
So when one day, I was chatting with another cartoonist about how I needed to ask myself for a day off, we began riffing on the concept and we each came out of it with a few ideas, including the above cartoon.
I think the reason most small businesses fail is that business owners have no problem asking for days off. I’ve only turned myself down twice in 25 years.
Hard work! That’s the answer.

I was literally unable to speak I was laughing so hard when I read your comment. It took a moment to sink in, but when it did — oh, funny! Then you left a comment here on another post saying you were “primarily … a dime-a-dozen, cheap, two-bit stand up comic with a bunch of web sites” and I laughed again. I was having a bit of a bad day, but it all changed when I read your comments.

I always cringe when people say they want to start a company so they can be their own boss. The truth is that you’ll have more bosses than you did when working for an organization. Your customers, the regulators, the IRS, your landlord and many more people will be your “bosses”. A cartoon on that would really resonate with small business owners.
I run ProNet Career Resources and Resume Builder. The biggest problem I face is putting in too much time and not seeing the results (clients) grow astronomically/sustaining. I have no budget and no funds to put out. ProNet is non-profit and people don’t want to pay to have their resumes redone….they are unemployed for the most part. What to do!! It’s not steady.
