Imagine a world where receipts are collected digitally without the need for paper and where they could be imported directly into your expense sheet without manual input.
Imagine a world where your sales team or other employees while traveling wouldn’t need to waste their time (and yours) typing in receipts. And imagine a world where you wouldn’t need to get your accountant or another employee to do it either.
This is the kind of world Tallie is trying to create, say those responsible for the cloud-based expense management system.
The software-as-a-service solution claims it provides the fastest path from receipt to balance sheet available by digitizing most of the process. As Tallie Founder and CEO Chris Farrell explained to Small Business Trends recently:
“It does not look or feel like accounting software.”
Instead, the application is designed to be intuitive and can be used from a mobile device, Farrell said. The system features capture of receipts with the camera on your smartphone, uses a mileage calculator to compile travel expenses and imports expenses directly from a business credit card account.
Or you can select individual business expenses from your personal credit card records.

Tallie works with other accounting software importing expenses to Quickbooks or to Xero via Bill.com. And there’s effort, as implied in the video, to further integrate with Intacct.
Farrell says Tallie has already drawn interest from big accounting firms seeking to cut costs and boost customer service with the software. But he says a large part of the push is to market the service to small to medium sized businesses too:
“Our goal as a company is to level the playing field…We have a lot of very big clients and lots of really small clients.”
To that end, Tallie has created what it considers to be a small business-friendly price model for its cloud-based expense services.
The company offers a free trial sign up and then charges $9 per month per user — in other words, per account holder using the service to capture and import expenses.
There is, however, a $25 per month minimum charge. So obviously you would need to have either the number of employees or the amount of time spent collecting and entering expenses to make this worthwhile.
