Not many of us are fortunate enough to have the job of our dreams. That’s a job when we wake up in the morning truly looking forward to getting to work and the day ahead.

Hopefully, if you are a business owner you chose to start a business that interests you and which you enjoy. And the fact that it is your own business which you want to succeed should be motivation enough.

However, whether you are a business owner, a team leader, or a regular member of the staff, we all go through periods when our motivation flags.

Motivate Your Team in 30 Days”, by Dave Urichuck and Bob Urichuck, offers a practical and thought-provoking look at motivating your team through team effectiveness meetings.

Self-Motivation

“Motivate Your Team in 30 Days” commences by explaining the concept of motivation, and by getting readers to evaluate themselves to determine what the factors that motivate them are. This is achieved through a series of questions which, when answered, should provide the reader with the main factors in their life that motivate them, or cause them to be demotivated.

This is a good starting point for a book on team motivation. After all, if team leaders don’t understand what the motivational factors in their own life are, they will surely not be able to identify and work on those of their team.

When looking at self-motivation, the authors discuss the importance of desire, self-confidence, self-esteem, self-respect, and self-worth. They explain how these, together with your values and attitude, play an important part not only in your own motivation, but also in your ability to motivate others.

Facilitation

The core of “Motivate Your Team in 30 Days” centers on motivating a team through a series of team effectiveness meetings, the subject of facilitation and how to be an effective facilitator is covered in depth.

Key areas covered include:

  • Developing an owner’s mentality within your team members
  • The type of questions that you should use during these meetings
  • How to empower the team into decision making and taking ownership
  • The need to engage your team in problem solving by use of brainstorming, draft solutions and allowing partnership and ownership
  • The types of decision making and their effects on team building
  • The need to maintaining and enhance the self-esteem of participants

What Motivates a Team?

Chapter 3 of “Motivate Your Team in 30 Days” covers the interesting topic of how at work the motivating factors for an employee differ from those of a supervisor. Citing a survey carried out on thousands of workers from around the world, surprisingly money came only fifth on the list of motivational factors.

The top three motivational factors were found to be:

  1. Full appreciation of work done
  2. Feeling of being in on things
  3. Help on personal problems

With these statistics in mind, the authors have developed a series of team motivational workshops to enable facilitators to ascertain the motivational factors for their teams and each individual. The priorities of these workshops focus on recognition, self-esteem, listening to the team members’ personal problems, and creating an inclusive environment.

The authors write:

“Simply by implementing these top three motivating factors in the workplace you will notice that employees will go out of their way to do a great job, because you took the time to recognize, include, listen, and thank them”.

To conclude “Motivate Your Team in 30 Days,” the reader is taken through the process of carrying out effective and motivating performance reviews, and also the use of Soar and Monthly Monitor charts to measure progress.

All the information needed for both purposes is gathered during the various team effectiveness meetings recommended and outlined throughout the course of the book.

Conclusion

“Motivate Your Team in 30 Days” is not your typical book on how to motivate a team. I found it to be both an insightful and practical book and one which I personally enjoyed. Although the title inplies that the content will solely concentrate on team motivation skills, it also provokes readers to look into their own motivational traits.

Whether you are a business owner, manager or are just looking for ways to motivate yourself, there is much to be gained from reading “Motivate Your Team in 30 Days.”
