Danielle Tate is herself a successful entrepreneur. In “Elegant Entrepreneur: The Female Founders Guide to Starting & Growing Your First Company” she sets out to guide would be female entrepreneurs down the path to success by providing details of the business concepts that need to be understood in order to be able to turn an idea into a successful business.

What “Elegant Entrepreneur” Is About

With input and advice from other female executives, founders and entrepreneurs, the author lays out the thought process and steps required to turn an idea from just being an idea into reality. Each chapter logically takes the reader through the necessary steps to follow in the attempt to create a viable business.

The need for an entrepreneur to carry out research plays a prominent part in the book during the various stages of the business cycle, especially at the outset. When looking at the viability of creating a business from an idea you may have, the author states:

“Validating and researching your idea or product is one of the most important steps in the journey to entrepreneurial success.”

Yet as the author points out, doing the research is not as fun as designing your business cards, logo and website, and this is why so often a new business might fail. However, researching how your service or product will be received by your expected clientele is crucial. If you find this to be an overwhelming task, the author suggests breaking it down into manageable steps. She further recommends a variety of ways to collect useful data, and advises of the need to separate yourself from your idea and use the feedback you receive from others to overcome any foreseen obstacles.

Obtaining funding, the timing of your launch and marketing are all discussed in “Elegant Entrepreneur,” as is the fact that sustaining a business is as challenging as starting one. As far as methods to help stay ahead of your competition are concerned, the use of SWOT analysis or the Porter Five Forces analysis are suggested as good ways to keep an eye on your competition, improve your business and to help you to secure your competitive edge.

After leaving college, Tate’s (www.elegantentrepreneur.co) (@Elegant_Entre) first job was selling Cannon copiers. At the age of only 25, having just experienced the time consuming process of changing her name when getting married, she bootstrapped MissNowMrs.com, the online name-change service for brides and newlyweds. Since then she has gone on to launch getyournameback.com which aids woman to get their names back after they have suffered a divorce.

What Was Best About This Book

I personally found the opening chapter to be the most interesting. In it the author discusses how to evaluate your idea and to determine whether it is a good enough idea to consider creating a business. Many people are so caught up in their idea that they fail to do the research to ascertain whether there really is substance to their idea, be it a service or a product. She advises the use of her innovation gauntlet, so that you can decide whether your idea is a stand-alone product or a feature to an existing product, and whether it is worth building a company around it or not.

Why Read “Elegant Entrepreneur”

Although this book has been written with the female entrepreneur in mind, “Elegant Entrepreneur” contains the kind of information which any would be entrepreneur will find useful. Whether you are looking to develop an idea and need guidance on how to move forward, or have already started out as an entrepreneur, “Elegant Entrepreneur” contains a wealth of ideas and information which will be useful from the conception of your idea to the time when you may want to consider exiting the business.
