Closet organization isn’t most people’s idea of a fun activity. But that’s why so many consumers need assistance in that area. Shoppers in Michigan and online can find some of the essential products they might need to organize their closets and other spaces in their homes at Organize-It.

Read on for more about this closet organizer company and its unique niche in this week’s Small Business Spotlight.

What the Business Does

Sells a variety of home organization products.

Devin Cooper, SEO Analyst for Organize-It told Small Business Trends, “We are a local business that offers custom closet design services, in addition to housewares. We sell many products; most of them are storage, organization, shelving, and closet products. We sell both national and local brands.”

Business Niche

Providing design guidance to customers.

Cooper says, “We have provided custom closet design for almost 20 years. Many companies offer housewares but few are able to guide their customers with their home design needs too.”

How the Business Got Started

Helping local homeowners in Michigan.

Cooper says, “We got our start in 1997, helping local homeowners design and install their perfect custom closet or garage. In 1999 we opened our first retail store/showroom in Rochester Hills, MI. The space served as a closet showroom as well as an outlet for our growing number of products to help people store and organize their homes, offices and garages.”

Biggest Win

Acquiring stacksandstacks.com.

Cooper explains, “In early 2014, we discovered that one of our competitors was struggling. We were able to negotiate a bid and acquired the website assets of the company. We relaunched the website with a new design and benefited from the bid very favorably.”

Biggest Risk

Moving to a larger space.

Cooper says, “The biggest risk was when we moved from our original 2400 square foot retail store to our current 7800 sq. feet retail store location in Shelby Township, MI. The new store was more than triple the size of our original store, but we needed the room because our internet sales were increasing. We took a risk and bought the space. Thankfully, not only did we keep up with current sales but we continued to grow rapidly as a result of our move.”

How They’d Spend an Extra $100,000

Improving the space.

Cooper says, “We would invest it in our facilities so our customers can have a more comfortable shopping experience.”

  1. I’d say that there is a significant market for this. There are so many people who are looking to be organized. I think that it is especially popular on New Year’s Day.
