VerticalResponse Releases Results Of “Political Impact” Survey

San Francisco, California (PRESS RELEASE – January 7, 2009) – VerticalResponse, the leading provider of self-service email marketing and direct mail solutions, today released the results of a “Political Impact” survey it conducted among a sample of its nearly 50,000 small business customers. Survey questions focused on predictions and expectations small businesses have for the Obama administration as he prepares to take office on January 20, 2009. The survey found that 66.4% of small business owners have been affected for the worse by the recession – and that a full 80% see the economic crisis as the primary mandate for the new government.

Small business is the backbone of the U.S. economy representing 99.7% of all employer firms, and generating 60 to 80% of new jobs annually over the past decade, according to the Small Business Administration. The VerticalResponse customer base is representative of the diverse group that makes up that number – spanning services and producers, home-based businesses and multi-office companies, across industries.

“The economy has dominated headlines and people’s concerns for months, and how the incoming administration will affect small business was a hot topic throughout the election – making Joe the Plumber a household name” said Janine Popick, founder and CEO of VerticalResponse. “Small business is the heart of our country’s economy, and we’ve dedicated our company and product development to cutting time and money out of their marketing costs, to help stimulate small business growth. VerticalResponse is very proud of the work we have done to provide our customers with all of the innovative tools that they need in order to continue seeing their business grow…and took this survey to help extend the voice of small business to Washington.”

Nearly 83% of the businesses surveyed make less than $250,000 mentioned so frequently during the election process, and 45.1% of small business owners polled believe that the incoming administration will have a positive impact on small businesses. While the economy tops most lists as the major concern, 72.5% have not had to lay off workers and 14.4% are still hiring.

Of the respondents, 55.3% are sole proprietorship LLCs, 31.6% are corporations, 6% are non-profits, and the remainder are described as “other.” Respondents were split nearly half: half (42.7%/41.3%) are located in urban or suburban areas, with the remaining 15.9% located in rural America – and are split nearly evenly throughout the regions of the country.
