WIPP And American Express OPEN Announce New Training Schedule For Small Business Owners

(PRESS RELEASE – January 9, 2009) – Each year, the federal government spends more than $400 billion in goods and services, 23% of which is slated for small business owners and 5% for women business owners. However, in recent years, the government has fallen short of this goal, awarding just 22% of contracts to small business owners and 3.4% to women business owners in the most recent fiscal year.

American Express OPEN, the small business division of American Express, and Women Impacting Public Policy have partnered to launch a series of interactive podcasts and webinars designed to provide all small business owners with an introduction to government contracting. The series helps business owners get the tools and information they need to create successful contracting bids and ultimately increase the amount of contracts awarded to SBOs.

The January training schedule is listed below; review these podcasts and register for upcoming webinars to learn more about the opportunities presented by the federal government.

* Give Me 5 Training 105: Getting Started in the Federal Procurement Marketplace – Overview of what you need to do to sign up and get registered as a small business wanting to do business with the Federal Government. Date: January 7, 2009 @ 3pm EST

* Give Me 5 Training 106: Does the Government Buy what I sell? – Find out if the Federal Government buys the product or service your business offers. Learn ways to research what they are buying, when they are buying and who buys the most so you can establish which agencies you will target when marketing. You will also learn how to determine if your price will be competitive with other vendors already offering the government products and services similar to yours. Date: January 15, 2009 @ 3pm EST

* Give Me 5 Training 201: What to expect when doing business with the Federal Government? – Participants will come away with a blueprint of how to begin doing business with the Federal Government, from how to get GSA schedules and set aside designations to a discussion of IDIQ’s, GWACs and sole source set asides. Date: January 21, 2009 @ 3pm EST

This webinar series was co-launched by American Express OPEN and WIPP as part of Give Me 5, an education and mentoring program designed to help women business owners get involved in the federal contracting system. It derives its name from the Equity in Federal Contracting for Women Act (2000), which stipulates that 5% of federal contracts should be awarded to women business owners – a goal that the federal government has failed to achieve to date.
