Interview With An Author: Phil Simon

This series is underwritten by UPS. Discover the new logistics. It levels playing fields and lets you act locally or globally. It’s for the individual entrepreneur, the small business, or the large company. Put the new logistics to work for you.

Last week I met up with author, Phil Simon, at the GrowCo Conference, which ran from April 6th through the 8th, 2011 in Las Vegas.  He and I had been social media contacts for some time.  But it took an actual conference to bring us together in person.

And when that opportunity presented itself, I decided to take advantage of it.  Phil was kind enough to take a moment to sit with me to briefly discuss his book about small business technology, The New Small (see our review of The New Small).

During the interview, Phil mentioned what he refers to in his book as “the 5 enablers” – the 5 technologies that have liberated small business owners.  Therefore, I requested that Phil provide us with one of his favorite, iconic examples, regarding his 5 enablers that stands out in his mind.  And here’s what he said:

“A lot of people love Chef Tony.  He’s a restauranteur down in Maryland and he’s got one of my favorite quotes in the book, Anita.  “There are two parts of my brain – food and technology.  And I’m constantly thinking about how I can fuse the two together.” And the way he uses social media is really a case study in and of itself.

I do love the other companies in the book with the case studies, but that one comes up quite a bit because he’s constantly on YouTube, blogging and creating podcasts about how you can cut fish, about how you do things in a kitchen.  So that one stands out.  I don’t think there are many technology books out there that have an example of somebody cutting fish.”

As stated in our  review of The New Small, “It’s a biz book.  It’s a tech book.  It’s full of ideas.” In short, it’s a “must read.”  And if you need further information, you can find Phil on Twitter at  @philsimon and @thenewsmall.
