  6. A High Quality User Interface Increases Profits
Businesses could increase sales, customer satisfaction and profits with minimal investment and risk. Software and web sites written with high quality user interfaces (UI) enable people to do their work in an efficient manner. Here is an interesting quote, “It turns out that Facebook is an almost trivial productivity loss compared to the time siphoned by poorly designed and implemented enterprise business applications.”
The focus of this article is on the poor quality of (UI) and a solution for such. The following observations could apply to every product that is dependent upon a software driven user interface (UI)
Several companies that have had spectacular growth, had their impressive surge after making their (UI) straightforward and simple. This was not the sole reason for their success, but it was a major component of the formula. Two of these companies are Apple, and Google. In the articles about their success, the ease of using their (UI), repeatedly received much of the credit.
Typical of the praise for Apple’s superb user interface is, “They are absolute masters of (UI) design, and in making traditionally hard to use technology and making it accessible to novices (while not alienating the experts). They just do not have a peer in that area and everything else flows from that. My 20-month-old daughter was able to sit on my lap and play a game on my iPad. 20 months!”
Google has become the leader in their field; the excellent (UI) is among the primary reasons. Larry Page, CEO and co-founder of Google said, “Our decision to focus solely on providing users with the best search experience has made us an indispensable tool for millions.” Of necessity, this would include a great (UI).
People want a simple user interface (UI). A company’s software product may be popular with the public, but that popularity may be due more to a lack of a better alternative, rather than a love for their product.
In this article, the word “programmer” is used as a cumulative term that includes anyone who works on (UI).
A reason for the poor quality (UI) appears to be that many programmers dislike this work. On the web are articles about how bored the programmers are when designing the (UI), and how hard it is to recruit people for this job ; several programmers admitted that it is common for them and their colleagues in (UI) meetings to do anything but discuss (UI) matters.
Programmers are gifted people with incredible talent, who enjoy mentally challenging projects. Because of their superior insight into matters such as software development, they are bewildered when someone tells them that their (UI) design is problematic.
The remedy for the problem of poor (UI) design is to have Marketing, Sales or Advertising do as much of the (UI) as possible and practical. In addition, do this work before the actual programming commences. The personnel in these departments know that the level of sales and customer satisfaction determines their worth. They would have a strong vested interest in making a superb product.
Only non-programming personnel should be involved in the above-mentioned areas of (UI) design, and they alone would authorize changes. After sales of the product commence, send all (UI) related complaints directly to them.
Good to GREAT by Jim Collins contains case studies about good companies that became great. He said those companies that achieved the “great” status put the right people “on the bus and in the right seats”.
