Financial Planning Association’s National Capital Area Awards $6,000 to Our Daily Bread of Fairfax to Support Free Financial Clinics

HERNDON, Va., Sept. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — The Financial Planning Association of the National Capital Area (FPA NCA) announced that it has awarded $6,000 to Our Daily Bread of Fairfax, Virginia. Derived from the proceeds of FPA NCA’s 19th Annual Golf Tournament, held in Reston in May 2012, the grant will fund a part-time Our Daily Bread staff person to track the progress of participants in the nonprofit’s monthly free financial clinic over the next year.

“There’s no way to accurately demonstrate the tremendous success of our financial clinic without a dedicated part-time staffer following up,” says Lisa Whetzel, Executive Director of Our Daily Bread. “Thanks to the generosity of the Financial Planning Association of the National Capital Area, we no longer have to fund the position out of operating expenses. We can now use the money for other pressing needs, including food distribution to the hungry.”

“Since February 2011, we’ve collaborated with Our Daily Bread and other area nonprofit associations to provide free financial counseling sessions by our members to low and moderate income adults in the Fairfax County,” said Marguerita Cheng, CFP®, President of the Financial Planning Association of the National Capital Area. “We’re happy to expand our relationship with this wonderful program.”

Volunteer financial planners who are members of FPA NCA provide a one-time, 45-minute session to help clients examine their immediate financial situation and help them create a course of action to address concerns.  Our Daily Bread follows up with the client 90 days later to track the client’s progress.

According to statistics generated by the program, between 75% and 100% of the participants are taking positive steps toward cleaning up their financial picture 90 days after participation in the clinic.

Since the beginning of the collaboration, 20 financial planners volunteered 267 hours to counsel 85 adults.  Of those clients that responded to the 90 day follow up survey (80% average monthly response rate), on average 81% improved their financial situation.

“I only say congratulations!” said one client, who asked to remain anonymous. “The planner whom assisted me was excellent because my case was difficult.”
