When I received a review copy of Share of Mind, Share of Heart: Marketing Tools of Engagement for Nonprofits by Sybil Stershic (@SybilQSM), I was instantly reminded of the years when I was teaching Marketing for Nonprofits at Antioch University.
During my interview for the job, the dean asked me if I had any experience doing marketing for nonprofits.
I remember sitting there, and taking a breath so that I could buy myself some time to think and saying:
“Well, I’ve been working at this manufacturing company for four years and they didn’t make a profit this year — does that count?”
I was joking, of course, and we both had a good laugh about it — but the subject of marketing for nonprofits has never been more serious.
With an economy that has significantly reduced donations, nonprofits have to take a strategic look at their organizations inside a broader context. And this is where Share of Mind, Share of Heart can really help.
It’s common for people who are involved in nonprofits to look down on marketing as being too commercial because the focus needs to be on the mission of the organization. Stershic walks a balanced path between holding true to an organizations mission and making sure that the organization and all its constituencies are viable for the long term.
