Google Fiber Expands into San Antonio, the Largest Fiber City to Date

Google Fiber is on the move again. The company has announced that the much talked about high speed Internet and TV service will be expanding into San Antonio. This will be the largest city to get hooked up to the service.

San Antonio had been marked as a potential Fiber city for some time. Now, plans will soon be in the works to begin construction to bring the speedy connection to residents and businesses in the area.

But San Antonio residents and businesses will have a wait ahead of them. Like in other cities, Fiber may take a bit of time to become available.

Mark Strama, Head of Google Fiber, Texas, writes on the official Google Fiber blog:

“Soon, we’ll enter the design phase of building our fiber network in San Antonio. We’ll work closely with city leaders over the next several months to plan the layout of over 4,000 miles of fiber-optic cables — enough to stretch to Canada and back — across the metro area. This is no small task, and it will take some time, but we can’t wait to get started.”

Fiber promises upload and download speeds of up to 1 gigabit (1,000 Mbps). Google boasts this is up to 100 times faster than most basic broadband, compared to the U.S. average of 12 Mbps. That is not too shabby of a speed boost.

Google Fiber’s expansion is not a fast process.

The company claims they have been taking their time and working with cities to map out possible needs and challenges. It may be some time before Fiber comes near you. But if you are interested you can signup for updates and maybe keep your fingers crossed.

  1. I have quite a few friends on Google Fiber in Provo, UT and they all speak very highly of it. Faster internet speeds at affordable prices are great for SMBs, so I’m all for the expansion.

  2. I will get fiber in the near future… 🙂

  3. I am waiting for Fiber to reach the world. I am sure that they don’t plan to stop in the US. It will expand to the world eventually.

  4. I have been waiting for a fiber option in San Antonio for a couple years. It is my intention to have fiber internet access at the earliest junction of availability and price. Show me the target!

  5. This is indeed an amazing news!!!
