When In Doubt, Grin and Bear It

grin and bear it cartoon

I like to draw bears.

Recently I was at an event in Wisconsin with a bunch of other cartoonists. We were on stage drawing things suggested by the audience. Everyone was drawing their characters and coming up with funny gags based on things like football, Star Wars, etc.

Not me though. I drew a big fat blank. I couldn’t come up with any gags at all and the clock was ticking down so I got desperate and just drew a bear.

“Mark doesn’t like football,” my drawing of the bear said in a speech bubble, “so he just drew me. I’m Bear. Hello.”

The next drawing I did it again. “Hi again,” said the bear. “Sorry about this, but it’s me again. Bear. So, how are things? What’s new?”

As the show went on I just kept doing the bear and turned drawing a blank into a nice running gag. People kept wondering — will he do the bear again?! It was fun.

So, when I got home I still had bears on my mind and drew up this cartoon.
