The caption for this cartoon evolved quite a bit while it sat marinating in my spreadsheet for a month or two. At first it was, “They’re smaller, cheaper, and easier to assemble than cubicles.” Which just sort of sits there and asks you, “The joke is where?” Then it changed to, “They’re smaller and cheaper than cubicles, but everyone keeps climbing out.” That kind of sort of makes sense, and it’s jokier than the first. But the more you think about it the quicker it breaks down and you realize that there’s not actually a joke in there. The final caption popped up right before I sent it off to my assistant to shade and it seemed so simple, so obvious - that I wondered how I hadn’t seen it earlier. Maybe I just. . .needed a nap.
