How big is too big for a laptop? With the miniaturization of computing devices, anything over 13 inches is now considered big. So the new Dell Inspiron 17-inch 7000 2-in-1 is a behemoth that probably has many scratching their heads, and asking why?

It isn’t the first time Dell has taken things to extremes.

For the company, which is slowly but surely moving to the number one spot in the global PC market — Dell overtook HP for the first-place ranking for the first time in the U.S. since the third quarter of 2009, according to IDC — it was a way to really differentiate itself from the current batch of laptops everyone else is offering.

This 17-inch laptop is the only 2-in-1 in the market at this size. So it begs the question, is there a market for it?

The answer is an emphatic yes. It might not be widely adopted, but there will be enough customers to justify Dell’s decision to bring this product to market.

What Do You Get in the Dell Inspiron 17-inch 7000 2-in-1?

The screen size of course is the first thing that catches your attention, and the four configurations for this model all come with a 17.3-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) Truelife LED-backlit touch display with wide viewing angles.

In order to power this giant, Dell has several processors. The low-end version, which is available for $899, comes with the 6th Generation Intel Core i5-6200U Processor clocking in at 2.80 GHz and 12 GB of RAM. It has the same 1TB of storage and NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 2GB GDDR5 video card as all the models to keep your multimedia content running without any lag.

The next model ups the processing power to the 6th Generation Intel Core i7 processor clocking in at 3.10 GHz, which by the way is the same for the rest of the models. The RAM stays the same at 12GB, but the price increases by $100 to $999.

The top tier versions of this laptop have 16 GB of RAM and added solid state storage (SSD). The one for $1,149 has a 1TB hard drive and a 128GB SSD, while the $1,349 version only has a 512GB SSD.

The next question is probably, how long is the battery life? And taking into account the monitor size and processing power, Dell has done a great job to deliver 9 hours and 57 minutes of operability with the integrated 4-cell battery. This of course depends how you use it, but it is quite impressive for a 17 inch laptop.

The wireless connectivity and ports are the same for all the models. This includes, 802.11ac + Bluetooth 4.0, Dual Band 2.4 and 5 GHz and 1×1.

The ports will let you add virtually any peripheral in the market place with the HDMITM 1.4a, 1 USB Type C, 1 USB 3.0 with PowerShare, 1 USB 2.0 and a media card reader for SD, SDHC and SDXC.

Who is This Laptop For?

This is a power laptop that easily replaces a desktop. So power users such as professionals and small business owners that just want one computing device will appreciate the versatility and power of the 7000 2-in-1.

Dell also has marketed the device to creative types. Whether they are DJs, graphic artists, video professionals or others, these users will find a laptop that offers the engagement of a tablet with its touchscreen, while delivering the power of a desktop with the processor, RAM and storage.

The possibilities for this laptop are many, and by being the first company to provide a 17 inch 2-in-1  gives Dell a head start, because there will be competing brands with their version of the Inspiron coming soon.

Can you see yourself and your business replacing your desktop with a single powerful laptop? If so, please let us know.

  1. I have seen many similar devices where laptops can turn into tablets. There are even touch screen laptops. I guess what makes this special is that it is quite big.

  2. I think this is interesting. I love how it is 17 inches. That is quite rare for a laptop unless it is a gaming laptop.

  3. I think this is great if you want a laptop and a tablet. May be great for games too.

    • Hi Mobopreneur,
I think this is the future of portable computing. It really doesn’t make sense to get a regular laptop when you can get a 2-in-1. This series also comes in 11, 13 and 15 inch versions. We are doing another write up of the laptops Dell just introduced, so keep an eye on it.
