The Picture of Prosperity?

Results Business Cartoon

OK, take a moment and see if you understand what’s happening in this cartoon. I’ll wait.

Ready? Let’s continue …

Sometimes a cartoon makes perfect sense to you. You draw it up, send it out into the world, and find out that you’ve not only confused pretty much everyone, but actually angered a few.

This cartoon is a good example. The idea was based on someone posing for a portrait. Normally you’d see the person sitting on a stool and see the artwork in progress over the painter’s shoulder. But in this cartoon I thought I’d put someone at a desk and the twist was that the painter would paint the results of their work as a kind of portrait.

Is it a perfect idea? No. Is it funny? Kind of. (I’d portray it as more witty than funny.) Anyway, lots of people contact me wanting to know exactly what was going on here, and that’s OK. Not every cartoon is for everyone. And sometimes an idea I think is funny is more of a swing-and-a-miss.

I am curious though; before you read this, did you understand what was happening?
