Chapter 1 covers vision, Chapter 2 covers marketing to the ideal client, and Chapter 3 focuses on managing finances for your firm.   Chapter 4 covers say today operations, while Chapter 5 covers cultivating relationships.  The book is brief — only 156 pages — but offers a few workbook style checklists and a Q&A to reinforce the author’s points.

I felt the book really covered the key the key aspects of marketing and financing well, offering straight-forward solutions easy for the attentive reader to implement into daily tasks.  Lozano expresses these solutions in very honest language for the reader.  For example, check out her explanation of why lawyers underearn:

“How do you determine whether you should pay someone to do a task for you? It’s simple. Ask yourself, do you like doing that task? Better yet, do you strongly dislike doing that task? Is it a task that must be done? And is someone else better suited to perform that task?….For example, I hate billing and hate bookkeeping; In fact most lawyers do, but both must be done.  This is the main reason why so many of us under-earn — we are performing tasks that we don’t like and aren’t very good at.”

Lozano shares some basic operational decisions lawyers should make from the beginning — such as deciding how billing should be conducted and what payment options should be offered to clients.

I think entrepreneurs outside the law profession will also benefit from reading this book.  For example, any service-based business can use Lozano’s creative ideas about raising issues with clients through document questions and requests. Lozano also offers steps for targeting the ideal client, useful for the savviest startup as well as the savviest starting lawyer.
