Talks Break Down While Name-Calling Rises

I try to be subtle in my cartoons.

There are not a lot of wacky expressions or hand-waving or assorted other craziness to sell a joke. Not to say that other cartoonists don’t use those things to their advantage and do it well, but I generally prefer a quiet approach.

Take these two, for example. The guy on the left seems okay with it, maybe even in a little ‘silver linings’ kind of manner. The woman on the right mostly seems curious and interested, but not worried or upset.

And I think that quietness helps give the surprise from ‘name-calling’ a little extra camouflage so you don’t see it coming.

It’s hard to know for sure, but that’s my preference and my theory.
